Are there people doing things that are “frivolous” who annoy you? Take a closer look at that annoyance. Is the truth behind your annoyance that you really wish you could live so freely, that you didn’t have so many serious responsibilities and could be as “immature” as they are?
This may sound crazy to most of you but there is truth in these feelings we have. Yes, we are taught to not be envious or jealous of others, but what's happening when we feel this way? It is my belief that most of the things we are jealous about are things we could actually change or attain yet we aren't living our life in a way to reach that so we harbor those awful feelings.
After a lifetime of being an overachieving do-what-everyone-expects-of-me student, when I embarked on my European adventure at 24 I wanted to give myself a break from the rat race in the US and find time to pursue my freshly discovered passions for writing, making a career of my speaking, taking my graduate courses online from our home and most importantly give birth to my son in Romania. Most people thought I was nuts, but my Mom got the angriest. I believe it was mainly out of fear but she still believed I wasn't making the best decision. I know she did, and has always, have my best interest at heart and this big adventure into the unknown scared her.
Thankfully I ignored her, as I did everyone else who tried to discourage me.
A few years later, when it was clear that living, writing and speaking in Europe was one of the best decisions (and career moves) I ever made, my mom took up a new career and life change. And she moved to Georgia to serve God and begin a rewarding and fun job as a camp director with her new husband.
I’m convinced she was largely so upset because she wanted to do what I was doing. We were always adventurers together! At the time, I’m quite sure she didn't know that. But eventually she figured it out and today she is so happy with her new adventure and life!
So today's step to finding your passion is to think about and reflect on the areas of your life you could change but are just not taking action in doing so.
