On a recent flight I downloaded Brene Brown’s book “The Gifts of Imperfection.” Her big thing, the thing that resonated for me when I read The Gifts of Imperfection was that making a change in your life is about getting serious, deliberate.
This is exactly what I have been reflecting on and working towards and just a solidifier to begin taking some serious action. Brown say’s can talk about it, think about it, half do it…
but if it really matters to you, you have to fire up and hone your actions
and bunker down and BE IT. Live it.
How true is this? I bet we all can agree that deep down we know this, feel this and believe we should be doing this. BUT… daily distractions and our lack of commitments (I’m right there with ya...) keep us from honing in… bunkering down and being deliberate.
When reading more about Brene Brown I’ve found she credits her well being and happiness to being deliberate and getting real with herself. Here are her top 4 habits…
And prayer. Specifically The Serenity Prayer.
I know most of you who read my blog are on the same boat. We’re all wanting to get more committed and aligned to what matters to us. And to leave more of what doesn’t serve us at the last port. It’s friggen hard to do. And we can spend years trying to run from it, do it in half measure…only to fall back to our old ways again. That’s why today I want to challenge all of us to take some time to journal and reflect on the “Real You”…
Are you living the “real you”?
Are you ready to get crazy and change into the wonderful extraordinary you that’s hiding in the shadows of the “norms”?
I’m finding the only way to make the leap into change is to be clear. So I try to get as clear – and thus deliberate – as I can each day. There’s nothing magic to this. Or inaccessible. Just diligence. It’s friggen hard.
But this is what I am committed to do:
No sugar or gluten
Exercise in the morning
Less alcohol (it’s now down to one glass of wine at a time…anything else fuzzes me up the next day)
Reducing e-distractions. Gaming with my friends is going to have to go…I’m playing it at 11pm when I’m trying to commit to early nights!
And here’s the one that’s really a pearler:
Committing to everything I do. Even the small stuff, like deciding to eat lunch at 12.30, not 1.30. Or heading out the door for my morning run at 7 and not 9. Or whatever.
Because every time I commit, it builds up my deliberate muscle. Even if the decision might not be ideal, I’m practicing committing.
Besides reading Browns book on my flight, I also met a crazy cool woman. She was 74 years old and didn't look a day over 50… if that. I was inspired to hear her stories and how much everything I was reading aligned with her life. She has been living those positive changes for more than 40 years and she attributes her health and happiness to making those changes, getting real with herself and being deliberate.
So there is was, a great book and proof of a woman who was living a deliberate life. An Aha… moment!
What do you do to get serious and real with yourself? Actually, more interestingly, what are you wanting to get deliberate about…I’m betting we’re mostly seeking the same thing…
Have a wonderfully deliberate day friends!
