Tonight I was invited by my brother in-laws mom to come eat mushroom soup she made! In the summer it's tradition and fun to go hunting in the mountains for mushrooms. Our home in Romania is situated in a valley surrounded by beautiful mountains. This time of year the people in the village are hiking and collecting mushrooms. Of course the tradition is nice but what it means to them is food for winter. Romanians pick, clean, slice and put most mushrooms to dry and when the 5 hard months are winter arrive they can make soups like the one pictured above and warm their cold bones.
I've always loved mushrooms and growing up in Florida I ate mostly in Spaghetti or stuffed with delicious mixtures and baked! Hunting for mushrooms is like hunting Easter eggs... except of course more difficult for people like myself used to sea level elevation without any incline... but I love going into the mountains for mushrooms. The beautiful of the forest... the silence except for the melody of the birds... and the hint for searching for the mushrooms peeking out around the leaves and trees.
I of course have been warned and have a healthy fear of picking poisonous mushrooms. The locals have charts and books for me to look at and become familiar but most of them are used to this since childhood and they no longer even need to look... they even have preferences and only pick the ones they like. I was picking anything that wasn't poisonous and am learning which type I prefer.
I have loved learning about the traditions, the culture and the beliefs of people around the world.. especially here in Central and Eastern Europe. The work ethic of the people is amazing and the knowledge they have of surviving the seasons and especially winter is fascinating.
You can hike and collect your own share of mushrooms as you please or when the season is as rich with them as it is now you will find people selling on the side of the road... therefore making it easier and saving you a hike. All in all.. I am enjoying the seasons and all thate each brings with it. Thus it is mushroom season and I plan to hike and gather lots:)
Do you have special traditions in your family? Certain things at certain times of the year you do? Such as Mushroom picking??
Have you thought of starting your own traditions and passing them on to your loved ones?
I hope your week have been great and that the streak is becoming second nature.
Tomorrow is Friday and we will have the weekend to relax.. reflect and explore! I encourage you to get out and do something different.. try something new!
Lots of love!
